Everything You Need to Know About Treatments
Pigmentation Treatments at Our Aesthetic Clinic
What is hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation refers to areas of skin that appear darker due to excess melanin production. This can be caused by sun exposure, hormones, inflammation, acne or genetics. Common types include melasma, age spots, sun spots and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
What is the difference between Cosmelan® and Dermamelan®?
Both are professional depigmentation systems designed to treat pigmentation at its source by regulating melanin production.
Cosmelan® is ideal for mild to moderate pigmentation.
Dermamelan® is a stronger, medical grade option for moderate to severe, stubborn or recurrent pigmentation.
Your practitioner will assess your skin and recommend the most appropriate treatment.
Who is suitable for these treatments?
Most skin types and tones can safely undergo Cosmelan® or Dermamelan®, including darker Fitzpatrick types. Suitability depends on:
- Type and depth of pigmentation
- Skin sensitivity
- Medical history
- Lifestyle and treatment expectations
A consultation is required to determine the best approach for your skin.
What happens during the in clinic procedure?
The treatment begins with cleansing your skin, followed by the application of either the Cosmelan 1 or Dermemelan depigmentation mask. The mask stays on for a prescribed duration, after which you remove it at home as instructed.
What is the purpose of the at-home maintenance cream?
The at home phase is essential. Cosmelan 2 or the Dermamelan follow up cream works to:
- Continue suppressing melanin production
- Enhance and maintain your results
- Prevent recurrence
- Support healing and skin regeneration
Consistency is key for long lasting improvement.
How soon will I see results?
Most clients notice:
Brighter skin within 1–2 weeks
Significant fading of pigmentation within 4–6 weeks
Continued improvement over 3–6 months, depending on the protocol
Results depend on skin type, pigmentation depth, and adherence to aftercare.
Is there downtime?
Yes, some mild downtime is expected. You may experience:
- Redness
- Dryness
- Tightness
- Peeling or flaking
- Temporary sensitivity
These are normal and typically settle as your skin heals.
Is the treatment painful?
Most clients describe the mask application as warm or slightly tingly rather than painful. Some tightness or sensitivity may occur in the days following treatment, especially with Dermamelan® which is stronger.
Can the pigmentation come back?
Proper maintenance significantly reduces recurrence however, pigmentation can return due to:
- Sun exposure
- Hormonal changes
- Heat
- Underlying skin conditions
Daily SPF 50+ and ongoing homecare help protect and sustain your results.
How many treatments will I need?
Both Cosmelan® and Dermamelan® are designed as single treatment programmes with a structured homecare phase. Additional treatments are not typically required unless addressing new or persistent pigmentation.
Are these treatments safe for darker skin tones?
Yes. Cosmelan® and Dermamelan® are formulated to be safe for all phototypes, including Fitzpatrick IV–VI. Your treatment plan will be personalised to ensure safe, controlled results.
What aftercare is required?
Key aftercare includes:
- Daily use of prescribed homecare products
- Strict sun protection with SPF 50+
- Avoiding heat exposure (steam rooms, saunas, hot yoga)
- Avoiding exfoliants and active acids unless advised
- Hydration and gentle skincare
- Your practitioner will provide a personalised aftercare plan.
Can I combine this with other treatments?
In most cases, yes however timing matters. Procedures like microneedling, chemical peels and laser treatments should not be performed until your skin has fully recovered and your practitioner approves it.
